Quoted four figures for a garden window over the sink just to grow herbs, is there a cheaper way to the same light

Mine leaked, and it leaked because I let a general builder fit it rather than a window installer. The failure was at the head flashing where the projecting box meets the wall, it took two winters to show up as a damp patch inside the cupboard, and the repair cost roughly what the window had. If you do go ahead, ask specifically who does the flashing detail and get it in writing.

raised the annual plan from $180 to $240 and 4 of 11 renewals churned

They look eventually, and when they find it that way you get a chargeback and a bad review instead of a churn. Depending on where your customers are you also may simply not be allowed to increase a recurring charge without notice. This is one of the few places where the boring compliant option is also the commercially better one.

Only flat surface I have is the bedroom carpet: how paranoid should I be about static?

Ranked by what actually goes wrong on carpet: screws vanish into it, the case tips over while you are torquing the cooler down, and a long way behind those, static. Put the empty motherboard box or the case box flat on the floor and work on top of it, keep a magnetic tray or a cereal bowl for screws, and lean the case against a wall or a chair leg while fitting the cooler. Do those three things and the carpet stops being a factor.
