At four thousand visits and twenty one signups, attribution is a hobby, not a discipline.

Add one optional field to the signup form asking how they came across it. Twenty one answers a month is a small number you can read in full, and reading twenty one sentences from real people will tell you more than any dashboard will at this scale. When you get to a few hundred a month, revisit.

Do not let this one incident push you into a fortress. One abusive account out of however many hundreds is normal and the cost was $180, which is a bad afternoon rather than a business problem.

Specifically, resist adding identity checks at signup. Every friction step you add to stop the one person costs you a percentage of everyone. Cap usage, alert yourself, and move on. The dispute ratio thresholds that get quoted around card network monitoring programmes come with monthly event floors in the thousands, so a solo product is not at risk from them - your realistic risk is your own processor's risk team noticing an unusual pattern, and one dispute does not do that.

Split it at the hardware line and stop trying to be clever below that.

The config tricks are real and worth doing on your own machine: an includeIf on gitdir so anything under ~/side commits with the personal email automatically, a separate ssh key with its own Host alias in ~/.ssh/config, and a browser profile that has never seen a work login. That prevents the honest mistake where you push at 11pm with your work email in the author field.

But none of that helps if the bytes ever touched their laptop. Own machine, own network, own accounts, own hours. That is the whole argument, and every extra layer under it is decoration.

Tubeless front tyre burps air on hard corners at 25 psi

Hookless rims at low pressure need a tighter bead fit than hooked ones, and 40mm at 25 psi on a 23mm internal is right at the edge where a burp is normal rather than a fault.

What actually helps, in order:

  • Two wraps of tape instead of one. It increases the effective bead seat diameter slightly and dramatically reduces burping. This is the single most effective fix and it is not a bodge.
  • Run two or three psi more up front until you know the setup. Twenty eight psi on a 40mm tyre is not a harsh ride.
  • Check your tyre against the rim maker's compatibility list. Some casings simply sit loose on some rims.

Ask the mod first, always, and ask before you have anything to promote. The message is four lines: I am building X for people here, I do not want to break your rules, where is the right place for that and would you rather I did not.

Half the time you get a rule. A surprising amount of the time you get an actual invitation - a lot of moderators are pleased that something exists for their niche and will tell you which channel it fits, or that they run an AMA slot, or that they will pin it if it is free. You cannot get that outcome after you have already posted.

The other half of it is time in the room. Answer thirty questions that have nothing to do with your product before you ever mention it. Not as a tactic, as the actual price of being allowed to talk there.

Is it normal for new disc brakes to howl for the first week of riding

It usually settles, but there are two causes worth separating because only one of them goes away.

If it is a low frequency howl that changes with speed and is worse when damp, that is normally bedding-in not being finished. Twenty stops from 25 km/h is fewer than most people think. I do about thirty stops from a higher speed, never coming to a complete stop, with cooling time between sets. Give it two more rides.

If it is a constant loud squeal from cold that never varies, suspect contamination. Chain lube overspray, a fingerprint, any oil at all is enough. Clean the rotor with isopropyl and a clean rag, then sand the pad faces lightly on flat coarse paper. If the pads actually soaked up brake fluid or lube they are finished and no cleaning brings them back.

Also check caliper alignment. A slightly skewed caliper makes an intermittent honk that people spend weeks blaming on pads: loosen the two mounting bolts, hold the lever hard, tighten alternately.

Creak from around the bottom bracket but only standing up on climbs

Bottom bracket creaks are famous liars. In order of how often I actually find it:

  • Saddle rails in the clamp. Out of the saddle you load and unload the rails and it ticks through the frame.
  • Seatpost in the seat tube. Strip it, clean both surfaces, thin smear of grease or carbon paste as appropriate.
  • Chainring bolts. Nine small bolts, all of which want clean threads and even torque, none of which anyone checks.
  • The actual bottom bracket.

It only happens standing because that is the only time you put a real bending load through the frame. Do the cheap ones first, chainring bolts take five minutes.
