Worth splitting the difference on the acid point. A twenty-minute tomato simmer in a well-established pan is survivable and I do it regularly; a ninety-minute ragu is what actually eats the seasoning. If your sauces are quick ones this is less decisive than it sounds.

I want to push back on the confident just-buy-a-base answers. Candle oils are formulated to dissolve in wax, and not all of them stay in solution in a diffuser base. I have had two go cloudy within a day and one separate into visible layers within a week, all from a supplier whose oils are excellent in soy. Mix one small test bottle of each and leave them on a windowsill for a week before you commit six gifts. The ones that stay clear are keepers. The ones that cloud are wax melts now.
Which is also why the rye-heavy ones look soupier for longer. Mine behaved exactly like this and it was baking bread by week three with no intervention beyond feeding it properly.
Patchy fur at hour 30 is roughly on schedule and the smell arrives late. My timeline: hours 0 to 18 nothing at all, 18 to 30 faint sweetness and the first white haze, 30 to 40 it starts generating its own heat and you must break the bed apart or it cooks itself, 40 to 48 the chestnut and mushroom smell shows up properly. The heat generation is the part beginners miss. Once it starts warming itself, furrow the rice into ridges and give it air, or you will get a hot core and dead spores in the middle.
Fair, and the two failure modes look identical from the outside. The tell is the pool. If there is a slick of oil sitting separate on top when you blow it out, it is load. If the pool looks homogeneous it is wick.
A flame that grows through the burn is a fuel supply problem, not a trim problem. CD-10 in an 8oz straight sided jar is a size or two up from where most people land with that wax and that much oil. Drop to CD-8, burn it four hours, and look at the flame height at the two hour mark rather than the melt pool.
Partly disagreeing, because the ceiling is task dependent and lumping it into one number hides that. Writing something new from scratch, three hours is my absolute limit and the fourth is worthless. Debugging or reviewing code, I can go most of a day if the problem is interesting, because the feedback loop keeps pulling me back in and it costs far less to hold in mind. So the honest version is that your ceiling for the hardest category of your work is around three, and the rest of the day can still be real work as long as you match the task to what is left.

Check the airlock is actually sealing before you diagnose anything else. Half my "stalled" ferments have been gas escaping past a lid gasket. Give the jar a gentle press and see if the airlock moves.
Jars and shipping will be more than half your total. Wax is the cheapest thing in the box. Budget for burning ten of the fifty and selling none of them.
Would do it again and would change the order completely. We started with the kitchen because that is what you look at, and then had to disturb half of it eighteen months later when the roof work and the rewire finally happened. Everything that keeps water out and everything that runs inside walls should come first, and every cosmetic decision should wait until those are finished, even if it means living with a horrible bathroom for two years. The money we lost was not on the kitchen, it was on doing it twice.
The cheaper fix for a gel ring is the plane. Bevel the edges and take a thin pass across each face with a soap planer or a vegetable peeler and the ring almost disappears, because the ring is a surface-visible boundary and the contrast drops once you remove the outer skin. Ten minutes for a whole loaf. Failing that, shred the loaf, and use the shreds as confetti in your next batch, where the ring reads as deliberate colour.
Definitely a flat sheet, no colonies. Skimmed it and it was back thinner by the next day.
For anyone finding this later: two weeks on, the kraut is sour and crunchy and there was no further drama after skimming.
Two things extend it and both are cheap. A rosemary oleoresin extract in the oils at the start slows oxidation, and a chelator like sodium citrate or a proper chelating agent ties up the trace metals that catalyse it. Since I started using both, my sunflower and rice bran heavy bars stopped spotting inside a year. I also stopped buying oils in bulk unless I will use them within a few months, because an oil that is already halfway through its own shelf life when it goes into the pot gives you a bar that starts life halfway to rancid.
This is what fixed it for me on nights. The fridge is the only piece of equipment that lets the dough wait for you rather than the reverse.
If you want the slime gone faster, rest the grains in fresh milk in the fridge for a few days. Cold slows everything, the ropey strains lose their advantage, and they come back normal. I would not rinse them in water, and definitely not tap water.
Cheaper option that works: a small ziplock bag of brine sat on top of the cabbage. It moulds to the jar shape and seals the whole surface better than a rigid disc, and if it leaks you have lost nothing since it is the same brine. Fill the bag with brine rather than water in case it does.
