One thing nobody has said: check the exhaust was not near anything, and where the car was parked.
Fourteen hours of exhaust into an enclosed or semi-enclosed space is the genuinely dangerous version of this, and it is why the story usually comes with a warning attached. Outside and open, as you describe, is a fuel bill. In a garage, even one with the door open: it is a different situation entirely and the concern is people, not the engine.
