One concrete habit for this situation rather than a verdict on this app. Install it with the minimum permissions it will accept rather than the ones it asks for, and see whether it still does the thing you wanted. A surprising number of these work fine without the contacts access they request on the first screen.

If it refuses to function without something that has nothing to do with its purpose, that is your answer and you did not have to read a word of the terms.

The pattern is worth naming before the specifics, because it repeats every few months. An app goes from nowhere to the top of a chart in about ten days, everybody you know sends it to you at once, and the coverage is all about what it can do and none of it about what it takes.

So the useful question is the one you asked. What does it get in exchange. For anything in this category that means: what is it allowed to read, where does what you give it end up, and is the content you make with it yours.
