For fifteen years a Google laptop meant a Chromebook: cheap, simple, lives in the browser, bought in bulk by schools. There is now a second kind, called Googlebook, and the pitch is almost the opposite. Pre-orders are open and they go on sale in the US on 4 October 2026, with Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany and Australia a day later.

What it is: a laptop built on the Android stack with foundations from ChromeOS, with Gemini built into the core rather than added on top. Google's framing is a move from an operating system to an intelligence system. In plainer terms it is a premium AI-first laptop that runs Android apps natively and works closely with an Android phone.

The differences that actually matter. Price: Chromebooks often sit under 400 dollars, Googlebooks start at 899. Minimum memory: Chromebooks vary and are frequently 4 to 8GB, every Googlebook ships with at least 16GB and 256GB of storage. AI: Gemini features bolted onto ChromeOS versus Gemini at the centre with a dedicated NPU. Updates: varies by Chromebook model, ten years promised on Googlebook. Audience: schools and budget buyers versus premium buyers who already carry an Android phone.

The features being pushed. Magic Pointer, where wiggling the cursor gets you Gemini suggestions based on whatever you are pointing at, a date offering a calendar entry and so on. Custom widgets by voice, where you ask for a dashboard and it assembles one from the web or your Gmail and Calendar. Phone continuity, opening your phone's apps and files from the laptop and carrying on what you were doing. And a Glowbar, a light strip for notifications and Gemini animations, which is styling rather than function but will make them recognisable across a room.

The launch line-up: Acer Googlebook 14 at 899, Dell XPS Googlebook at 1,199, then HP, ASUS and Lenovo models at 1,299. Launch bundles are reported to include a year of Google AI Pro plus YouTube Premium and Photoshop offers.

Who it suits: you have an Android phone and want the laptop to pair with it the way a Mac pairs with an iPhone; you live in Gmail, Docs and Drive; you want the AI integrated rather than bolted on; ten years of updates appeals.

Who it does not: you are on a budget, in which case a Chromebook or a mid-range Windows machine costs far less for the same tasks. You need specific desktop software, full video suites, games, or anything that only runs on Windows or Mac. Or you are deep in Apple's world, where a MacBook fits your phone better.

And the honest caveat: this is a first-generation platform. First generations have rough edges and app support for the laptop form factor will improve over a year or two. If your current laptop works, there is no cost to waiting for real reviews. Chromebooks are not going anywhere today either. For now the division is simply budget and education on one side, premium on the other.
