One-way friction is the bit that makes it make sense. It resists the direction chain slap pulls and not the direction shifting needs.

One thing worth checking on a bike that is new to you: whether the clutch has ever been serviced.

They have a service interval that essentially nobody observes, and a five-year-old derailleur that has never been touched often has a clutch that is either seized solid or doing nothing. If yours feels dramatically different between on and off, it is alive and well. If the two positions feel similar, the mechanism is probably dry and the switch is decorative at this point.

Cheap test, and it tells you whether you are getting the feature you think you are getting.

One practical thing that beats the dial setting either way: keep it full.

Frozen mass is thermal ballast. A full freezer holds temperature far longer when opened and during outages, and cycles the compressor less. If yours is half empty, jugs of water take up the space for free and do the job perfectly.

That gets you most of the resilience benefit of running colder, without the running cost and without drying anything out.

One safety note since jump starting came up: modern cars would rather you used the designated jump points than the battery terminals directly, and many have a marked positive post under a plastic cover and a separate earth stud specifically for this.

It is not fussiness. Connecting straight to the terminals on a car with a battery monitoring sensor on the negative lead bypasses the sensor, and the car then has no idea what state the battery is in - some will undercharge it for weeks afterwards.

Worth thirty seconds in the handbook before the next time, not after.
