$500 all in for espresso, what did you buy and what did you have to accept?

Steam is the thing you will feel every single day with two milk drinks. A basic thermoblock machine will steam a small jug adequately and will not do two in a row without a wait, and a single boiler needs a temperature switch and about thirty seconds between brewing and steaming. Neither is a dealbreaker for one person. Both are miserable if you are making four drinks for guests.

Why does a home espresso machine cost more than my washing machine?

Some of it is absolutely the buyer. There is a well-populated segment where the machine is furniture: polished steel, a badge, a shape: and the internals are shared with something half the price. The way to see this is to look up which parts the manufacturer sells as spares. If two machines take the same pump, boiler and group, you are looking at a housing difference.

Which espresso machines are still repairable in ten years, rather than sealed shut?

Mildly against the premise. Buy-it-for-life in espresso usually means buying something with a manual pressurestat and no electronics, which also means no shot timer, no PID, and warm-up times measured in half an hour. That is a genuine trade and plenty of people who chase permanence end up not enjoying the machine daily. Decide whether you want an heirloom or a good morning.

Client wants 9am New York calls while I am in Bangkok, what actually works

Two structural options nobody mentions. Price it: an inconvenient schedule is a service and it can carry a premium, especially at renewal. Or move your base rather than your body clock, because Europe gives you five or six hours of overlap with the east coast and you can work daylight hours in both. If this client is a big share of your income, a season in Lisbon or Tbilisi solves the problem permanently instead of nightly.
