Five months in and the model writes my functions faster than I can read them, is this still worth learning

I work in a codebase where about half my output is now assistant-drafted and the other half is stuff I would never trust it with, so I see both sides daily. The generated half is fine because I can read a diff and know instantly whether it fits the system, and that reading ability came from years of writing the boring version by hand. There is no shortcut into the reviewing skill that skips the writing skill, at least not one anyone has shown me. Keep going, just change what you spend the ten hours on.

Fungus gnats still hatching after three weeks of bottom watering and sticky traps

Sticky traps catch adults, which is the least important part of the population, and bottom watering keeps the top dry but leaves the middle of the pot permanently damp, which is where larvae live happily. What actually works is treating the larvae: a soil drench with a BTI product, the mosquito bits sort, steeped in water and used as your regular watering for three consecutive cycles. It targets larvae specifically and breaks the generation chain. Three weeks of trapping adults will never win because each female lays 100 or more eggs.

Three years in and I still pay myself whatever is left: how did you set an actual number?

I do the books for about a dozen shops your size and the ones who sleep at night all do the same thing: pay yourself on a fixed date like any other member of staff, at a number the worst month of last year could have covered. Not the average month - the worst one. Then any surplus gets swept quarterly into a separate account and you decide consciously whether that's a drawing, a tax reserve or a new mixer. The random-amounts approach isn't really a pay problem, it's that your business account and your personal life are sharing one bucket, and while they do you'll never know whether the shop is profitable.

Dividend portfolio versus a broad index in a taxable account, did the tax drag change your mind?

I did the version you are describing and got it wrong instructively. I screened for yield above five percent, ended up heavy in two sectors, and within eighteen months three positions had cut and one suspended entirely. The income I was collecting for the good feeling turned into a spreadsheet I checked anxiously every earnings season, which is precisely the opposite of why I did it. I still hold dividend payers, but now they are chosen on whether I would want the business without the dividend, and the yield is unremarkable.

Wet and dry paper on float glass, does the scary sharp method hold up for kitchen knives or is it a woodworking thing

Do not try to map paper grit onto stone grit, they are different scales and different abrasives and the numbers lie to you. Judge by what the edge is doing instead: are you raising a burr along the full length, has the previous scratch pattern been fully replaced, does the burr flip cleanly. A 2000 grit paper finish on a kitchen knife will slice paper and push cut a tomato happily, which is all a kitchen knife needs.

Living on dividends only, how big did the portfolio get before the cheque covered the bills?

I stopped working in 2019 on a dividend heavy portfolio and got tested almost immediately. Across 2020 a meaningful slice of my income was cut or suspended, and several of those cuts came from names that had paid without interruption for decades. It came back over the following two years, but during that stretch I lived on the cash buffer and could not have covered the year on distributions alone. If you build this, build it assuming a fifth of the income can disappear for eighteen months, because mine did.

Dealer keeps steering me to a monthly payment when I want a total price, how do you hold that line?

Do it by email and the problem largely evaporates. I contacted five dealers with the same message: this exact specification, please send me your out-the-door price including every fee, I will buy from whoever is lowest this week. Two ignored it, one replied with a payment, and two sent actual numbers. The gap between those two numbers was substantial on a car of that price, and I bought from the lower one without ever negotiating face to face. Email also gives you the number in writing, which matters when you get to the desk and the figure has drifted.
