First time in South America, my Spanish is about forty words, and I have $2,500 for the ground portion after flights. A small-group operator quoted $1,900 for ten days plus a single supplement, which is most of my budget but covers everything. My worry is being locked to nine strangers and a 6am bus schedule for a week and a half. For those who've done both, which version did you actually regret?
I did Peru independently and Vietnam on a tour, so here's the concrete comparison. Peru's main circuit is about as well-worn as travel gets - buses are bookable online in English, the hostels are full of people doing exactly what you're doing, and forty words plus a translation app is genuinely enough in Cusco. What a tour sells you is logistics and the removal of decisions, not company; you'll meet as many people in one Cusco common room as on a ten-day tour. The one piece of Peru logistics that isn't optional is the Inca Trail itself, which you can't walk without a licensed operator and a permit.
Worth adding that those permits go early and sell out for the popular months, so if the classic trail is the reason you're going, that decision gets made for you months ahead. The alternative treks don't have the same restriction, which is how a lot of people end up on them.
Going to disagree with the people telling you to wing it. For a first trip to a continent where you don't speak the language, the tour buys you a floor under the worst version of the trip - the day you're ill at altitude, the day a road is closed, the day you get the bus time wrong. Ten days with strangers is not a marriage, and every tour I've been on had people peeling off for the afternoon without drama. Do it independently on trip two, when you know what you actually like doing.
My regret was the specific tour, not tours in general. Fourteen days, a 5:45am departure most mornings, and the one town I loved got two hours because the itinerary said so. If you book one, read the day-by-day and count the nights in the same bed - anything under three separate two-night stops in ten days and you'll spend the trip on a coach.
The two-night rule is the best filter I've found for tour itineraries. Everything else in the brochure is written to sound identical.
Book the trek through an operator because you must. Do the rest yourself. You'll have money left for a second week.

I priced this exact decision two years ago and did it independently for well under half the tour quote, dorm beds, overnight buses instead of internal flights, and menú del día for lunch. The single supplement is the bit that makes tours look worse than they are: you're being charged extra for the privilege of not sharing a room with a stranger, and on the independent version that cost simply doesn't exist because you choose a dorm or you don't. If you'd rather have the guide and the transfers, fine, but go in knowing roughly half your money is buying convenience.
