Solo, shipping a small paid app. Today's Android build sat in the queue for 52 minutes before it started. That was the third build of the day because I was chasing a signing config problem, so the day mostly consisted…
I am 37, in reasonable shape, and I lift weights consistently in a gym. A month ago I started learning to surf, and I need about three full days to recover from each lesson, more if the water is rough. That seems like a…
I am building a small door. The frame is glued and nailed, about 25 mm thick, and thin birch plywood will be glued to both faces. My plan was to glue oversized plywood and trim it flush afterwards. The complication is…
She brings home ratio and proportion questions and I show her the way I was taught, cross multiply and solve. The answers are right and the working gets a line through it, because the school wants bar models. Now she…
We started with sticks and stones and we now have atomic clocks and electron microscopes, many orders of magnitude more precise. What I cannot picture is the bootstrap. To make a precise thing you seem to need a precise…
Every blog post says something different and half of them are selling a tool. Some say B2B cold email is fine under legitimate interest, some say you need consent, some say it depends on the country. I want to email…
At work socials I can talk to anybody for an hour if it is just the two of us. Put me in a circle of five and I have nothing: by the time I have a thought worth saying the subject has changed, and if I do start talking…
node function on a serverless platform, managed postgres with scale to zero, about 200 requests a day and all of them in office hours. a normal weekday cold start is around 900ms and consistent. the first request after…
It reads about 4000 rows, does some filtering and grouping, and the totals are roughly ten percent off what I get doing it by hand for a small sample. No exception, no warning, just wrong. I have been adding print…
Express in front of Postgres, one 2 vCPU box, restarts itself nightly which is the only reason we do not fall over. Resident memory starts around 200MB after a deploy and is comfortably over a gigabyte by the evening,…
Thick bone in chops, cast iron pan, ordinary gas hob with an extractor that is basically decorative. Every time I do the traditional hard sear first the kitchen fills with smoke and the alarm goes, and the middle is…
Plenty of libraries get described as not production ready purely because their version number starts with a zero, and plenty of others sitting at 0.x are depended on by large systems without anybody blinking. So the…
I want to print short text or small graphics onto square sticky notes: around five centimetres two or three times a day. Mostly short task lists that I stick somewhere visible and remove when done. They do not need to…
First product that anyone has paid for, so I have no baseline for any of this. Month 4. 212 paying at $19. Last month 14 people cancelled out of 214 at the start, so 6.5%. The month before was 7.1%, and before that…
Small kitchen, induction hob, and I drink one strong black coffee in the morning and nothing after. I currently use a french press and I am bored of the sediment and the cleanup. A moka pot is about a tenth of what an…
Bedroom, roughly 3m by 3.5m, carpet, one window, and a laptop that runs a DAW fine. I want to record guitar and vocals well enough to release songs, not to track other people's bands. The bundles all look like a saving…
UK, 8 kW air source pump about a year in, no battery, small hot water cylinder, and both of us work from home so the heating runs through the day rather than in bursts. We are on a standard flat rate now. Everyone tells…
My mental model of a viral infection is that an infected cell produces a large number of virus particles and then dies, and those particles infect nearby cells preferentially because they are closest. Run that forward…
solo dev, first react native app, six weeks in. added a barcode scanning lib with a native module and expo go now crashes on launch with a missing native module error, while the js side is untouched. i can see the words…
Moved to Android last month and discovered the watch I'd worn for three years does essentially nothing now, which I should obviously have researched first. Budget $200 400 and I mostly want notifications, decent sleep…
Suppose I register a domain with a name nobody would guess, and only a friend and I ever use it. No links to it anywhere, no search engine submission. My assumption was that it would be effectively invisible. But I…
A server with unattended updates enabled started failing to refresh its package lists. The errors are not found responses from the mirror, not connection failures, and the mirror hostname resolves and responds to a ping…
Four months in, ten minutes of scales at the start of every session, mostly C, G and D major, hands together, two octaves. I can play them and they are getting smoother, but I cannot point at a single thing in the…
I simulated data from a normal distribution and then computed the likelihood of that data under the very distribution that generated it. The number came out astronomically small. That is what confuses me. This is the…
Eight plants, all in the same room. I have been bottom watering only for three weeks, yellow sticky cards above every pot, and I let the top of the soil dry out properly between waterings. I catch maybe 20 gnats a week…
