Ten hours a week free, one client at a good rate or three small ones

The thing you're not counting is unbilled time. Three clients means three sets of emails, three invoices, three chase-ups, three context switches every week. In my experience that overhead runs 20-30% on small clients, which means your £30-35 is really more like £24-28 and the single client wins on money too.

Counterweight: one client at ten hours a week means one client is 100% of your side income, and when they pause for a quarter: and they will: you're at zero with no warm leads.

Is the First Home Super Saver scheme worth the paperwork if I am buying in about eighteen months?

It was worth it for me and the benefit came almost entirely from the tax treatment of the contributions rather than from investment returns, because eighteen months is nowhere near long enough for returns to matter. If your marginal rate is high the concessional contribution rate does the work. If your marginal rate is low, the paperwork buys you very little and I would not bother.

Three years at the same level with strong reviews, at what point is next cycle just a way of saying no

I waited through five cycles and then left, and the new place hired me at the title I had been asking for with a meaningful raise attached. That worked, but I want to be honest about the cost: I gave up four years of context and relationships and spent about a year rebuilding them, and my first eighteen months were harder than anything I did while waiting. Leaving is a real option, it is just not a free one.

first eu company customer wants an invoice with their vat number and the reverse charge note - what actually changes

The pragmatic route a lot of solo people take: move to a merchant of record, where the platform is legally the seller and handles VAT, invoices and filings. You pay noticeably more than a plain card processor - a percentage plus per transaction, not a rounding error - but you stop owning the compliance.

Compare that percentage against what an accountant charges for quarterly filings where you live and the arithmetic usually points clearly one way. Under a few thousand a month it's normally the platform.
