Over two years I have set up a hardened browser, always on VPN, email aliases, a self hosted DNS filter and a separate browser profile for shopping. I use exactly one of them today and the rest died from friction,…
Flicking through my passport I noticed the page beside the photo page is headed with a note that the space is reserved for official observations, followed by a line stating that there are no official observations. I…
Text messages pass through the mobile network in a form the operator can read, and the protocols underneath have known weaknesses that allow messages to be intercepted or redirected under some circumstances. Given that,…
Roughly 600k lines of Go in a single module, one repo, VS Code on a 16GB laptop. Opening the repo root has gopls climbing to several gigabytes within a few minutes and then completions start taking two or three seconds…
Follow on from the handoff conversation. Documentation cut my call volume a lot. It did nothing at all for the money, because I am still doing unpaid work at inconvenient hours on the grounds that "it is only twenty…
I have a well known entry level burr grinder, bought used a couple of months ago, used daily for pour over at a setting in the middle of its range. A few days ago the output became noticeably coarser at the same…
Our group had a disagreement at the crag today. A friend climbed a route without a rope that everybody else was climbing on a top rope. Another party objected, fairly strongly. My own position is uncomfortable. I was…
I want to replace the barrel plug on a low voltage DC power supply so I can run the device from a battery backup instead. The lead from the supply has two conductors: one plain white, one white with grey stripes. I do…
Suppose I live somewhere cold enough that I am heating my home at essentially all times, and consider a room with no windows. An inefficient bulb turns most of its electricity into heat rather than light. But that heat…
Six weeks into part time van living and I'm awake at 2am for everything a car door, someone walking past, wind moving the van. I'm parking legally in quiet places and nothing has ever actually happened. The days are…
Doing 300 miles a week on motorway, mostly on a naked bike with a small flyscreen, and I'm coming home with my ears ringing. I'm in a mid range full face that's fine everywhere except noise. Budget could stretch to…
Annual subscriber renewed on the 14th. My backend did not hear about it until she emailed on the 17th, opened the app, and it silently fixed itself in front of her. I listen to in a task started at launch and post each…
I keep seeing discussion of situations where a heavily shorted share rises sharply and the people who bet against it lose enormous amounts. I understand at the vaguest level that some people bet a share will fall and…
One API route, one indexed query returning about 40 rows. Locally it is 130ms. Deployed, the first request after roughly 15 minutes of idle takes 2.7 2.9s, and everything after that is 130 160ms. I wrapped the handler…
At 4k context I get 28 tok/s and everything is on the card. At 16k the same model gives me 3.1 tok/s. No error, no warning, it just gets slow. shows 23.9GB used, and the server log says it offloaded 51 of 65 layers to…
I spend about twenty minutes on a Sunday typing transactions into a sheet I built, and it has worked for eleven months, which is longer than either app lasted. The part I dislike is that I only find out I've overspent…
I have become fascinated by statements that would be clean theorems if not for a single stubborn exception. Not families of exceptions, not "except for small cases": exactly one counterexample, and then the pattern…
I want to cook a single egg with minimal effort and no dedicated gadget, and without watching a pan. The idea I keep coming back to is putting the egg in a vacuum flask with boiling water and leaving it. My attempt…
Rim brakes work better and pads last longer on a clean braking surface, which everybody agrees on. The grime sits in the machining grooves and does not want to leave. What I am after is a method that is genuinely…
Both files are mine, one is shared with four colleagues, and the link worked fine yesterday. This morning every cell in the destination shows REF and hovering offers the connect button, which I click, and nothing…
Reading through a repository I do not contribute to, I noticed a few small spelling mistakes in the README. Nothing that causes confusion, just typos. I can see three options: open a pull request, open an issue…
I want steps, heart rate, sleep and a two week battery, on Android, and I want to open the app and see the numbers without a monthly fee gating the interesting half. What I keep finding at this price is a cheap band…
14 packages, pnpm workspaces, with remote caching enabled. On my machine the second run is 100% cache hit in about 400ms. On CI it is 0/14 every single time, 6m41s, on a commit that changed one README. Things I have…
I generated correlated test data, fitted an ordinary least squares line and plotted both. The line does not look like it goes through the middle of the cloud. It looks rotated, sitting shallower than the long axis of…
SDK 54, managed workflow. On EAS the Android release job dies with and a duplicate resource message naming a drawable that two of my dependencies both appear to ship. The exact same commit builds green locally with and…
